The Internet of You: The Connected Home
The 2013-14 Britt Technology Impact Series is exploring how the internet is expanding from a network of connected PCs to a far broader array of devices that enable highly personalized interactions with technology. Consider that in 10 years an average household with two teenagers will have about 50 devices connected to the internet; today it has about 10. This explosion of devices with an IP address – often called the internet of things – represents a fundamental shift for consumers and enterprises. Search-and-click will still occur but the internet of the future will be far better at serving up what you need when you need it. The internet becomes your butler rather than a cluttered storeroom of often irrelevant information and services. Tech@Tuck, the highlight of the Britt Series each year, focuses on one aspect of the Internet of Things technology developments driving The Connected Home. Wi-Fi enabled devices and sensors have the power to transform the home. Security systems, smart refrigerators, automated door locks and lighting systems, smart smoke detectors, and wearable sleep sensors are all changing the way we live today. Devices that connect family members, wherever they are, bring us closer together. The platforms and technology underlying these devices and services are increasingly linked, creating endless possibilities for future enhancements to the way we live our lives. At this year’s Tech@Tuck, panelists will explore the technology driving The Connected Home and implications of connecting all aspects of our home lives.
